Blye, K. (3.17)
First Aired: February 28, 2012
Welcome back to NCISLA Rewind! Well this time Dave Kalstein is on the writer’s hot seat as he and long time NCISLA director, Terrance O’Hara combine their talents to bring us the conclusion of Blye, K. After last week’s opening episode, I’m not sure my heart can take any more of this emotional roller coaster ride but I know that I wouldn’t miss it for the world. We yearn to know more about Kensi’s history and why this sniper serial killer is going after Don Blye’s Black Ops unit. But it’s such a treat to see how her team members, especially Deeks are closing ranks to protect her and prove her innocence. So I thought I would go back and recap what we know which will help us move into Part 2.
• David Blake killed in car accident. He was part of Donald Blye’s sniper unit in 1997.
• Kensi was the last person to be in touch with him before he died because she wanted answers about his death.
• Kensi doesn’t believe it was a drunken driving death. His unit was disbanded and the accident was swept under the rug
• Four other members of the team are also dead. Jay Fisher is the only one left alive but he’s missing now.
• Kensi finds out the sniper unit was a cover story, they were actually a Black Ops team used for special missions for American security reasons
• Granger accuses Kensi of joining NCIS to track down the men responsible for her father’s death
• Kensi is the official suspect when they find out the car Blake was driving was tampered.
• Blake’s phone has series of calls from CIA and possibly Jay Fisher.
• Kensi was seen at Fisher’s home
• Kensi isn’t able to tell Deeks anything because she is trying to protect him….from?
• Blake called Alex Harris, CIA but once part of Black Ops unit. Is Harris the killer?
• Kensi is brought into protective custody
• Fisher is waiting for Harris at the shelter and he’s killed by bomb blast as he tries to get away from the team.
• Kensi has been requesting files of her father’s death for years and Granger has been helping her.
• Kensi escapes custody.
• Team find Harris and he requests protective custody. He will tell everything he knows but only to Kensi for redemption.
• Eric find out Ganger and Harris were in the same CIA division
• Harris tells Kensi that Blake came to LA to meet him and Fisher to find a way to keep Kensi from killing them. He tells her that her father was murdered and it was staged to look like an accident. The man that’s killing off the team is the man who killed her father.
• Sniper shoots and hits both Harris and Kensi. To Be Continued….
Ok, did you get all that?? Good! Let’s get into tonight’s show...
Kensi is up and running and going after the sniper but she wants to go it alone. It’s been a long wait for her to find out who killed her father and she is determined to see this through without the team’s help. Harris is dead and Granger is missing too? With the help of Calen and Sam, Hetty is going to have his head on a plate! But Granger is able to explain his actions and now he knows who the killer is! The man was the commanding officer of the Black Ops unit. They all though Peter Clairmont was dead, but he had faked his death. Sam and Callen figure out that he probably is the number one suspect in Donald Blye’s murder and the rest of the team. It all comes down to the sniper unit’s final kill of a US journalist. Kensi’s father realizes that Clairmont has gone rogue and killed the journalist for writing an expose on him.
The biggest surprise was yet to come! I didn’t think the creators were going to introduce Kensi’s mom to this story but when she asks Deeks to put the woman under protective custody and then reveals the women is her mom, I was pretty shocked. Even Deeks thought she was dead, as we all did. But now her mother is leverage and she won’t leave her behind despite hating the woman for leaving her dad. Kensi’s world is going to turn upside down and then back upside down again. The young girl who once idolized her dad finds out that the story she has been carrying around all these years may be all wrong. But Kensi believes in her dad and she’s right to do so. So we go back and forth and that’s when I knew Dave Kalstein was going to continue the crazy ride that Joe Wilson started.
And surprise! Granger turns out to be one of the good guys! Another twist of the tale and a good one too. I always loved the character and now we find out he was her dad’s friend and the only one he can trust. Whoo, I don’t know about you but my head’s still spinning!
Best Lines of the Show:
Kensi: What are you doing here?
Deeks: I just came to beat up some bad guys, save the damsel and distress and ride off into the sunset.
*******
Deeks: That’s my girl. No I don’t mean that kind of my girl, I mean the other kind of my girl.
*******
Deeks: Anyone else wondering what the world’s deadliest New Kids on the Block fan is doing about now?
Highlights of the Show:
• Nell with a gun! Watch out world!
• I thought I didn’t want to be in a dark alley with Hetty but Kensi’s got her beat in this episode! What a head lock!
• Hetty still protecting her kids. She really didn’t have to tell Deeks that Kensi would need a friend? He was already on it!
• Oooh, Granger gets to sit on the wrong side of the table!
• I loved the boys gathered in the boathouse talking to Kensi’s mom. Ok, Sam put your eyes back into your sockets!
• So many ah ha moments to this show. Now we know why Kensi became so bad ass.
• Pretty nice fighting there at the end Kensi! That’s our girl!
• Kensi gets to read her dad’s last thoughts in his journal and then makes up with her mom….What a wonderful way to end the show. Perhaps it was wrapped up all too nicely with a bow....but I loved it.
Deeks Moments:
It was nice to see the Kensi/Deeks partnership take it down a notch and watch Deeks become a friend above all else. When Shane Brennan said that Deeks would be running behind Kensi the whole show trying to save her, I guess I should have known it was going to be emotionally charged as well. Some beautiful scenes between ECO and Daniella Ruah tonight.
And what’s not to like about this moment of dialogue:
Deeks: I’m not talking about what they want. Forget what they want. I’m talking about us. I’m your partner. What makes you think I’m going to let you do this by yourself? Kensi: Because you’re my partner. Because this is my mother and you are the only person I trust.
Densi Watch:
I loved that despite the seriousness of the situation, they both find time to smile and care for each other. Well, no kiss yet, but there was a first intimate touch of her bullet hit. (Deeks: Well this is usually how the dream sequence starts.) Ok, I could hear the whole Densi nation inhale very quickly at that moment!
It seems Kensi has a dysfunctional past especially when it comes to her mother and Deeks is trying to find out what’s going on. Dave has written another great story about loyalty and trust. There’s that T word again. And Deeks knows when to step aside and trust his partner. Pretty gripping stuff.
When Deeks asks Kensi what he’s going to talk to her mother about, Kensi has no answer and it’s heartbreaking. And when she won’t talk to Deeks later in the restroom, I’m feeling their pain. The final scene between the two was wonderful to watch, I was starting to tear up along with Deeks!
So where does Kensi go from here? Her life has completely turned on a dime and she gets a second chance in life to go into a totally new direction. She is no longer defined by her past. So where will that lead her. I'm looking forward to her future!
What a great two part episode! Dave and Joe did an incredible job and told another iconic NCISLA story. No surprise there. We already know this show works best when it tells the inside story about its main characters and this was a story begging to be told for a long time. Can’t wait for who’s next!
So what did you think of Blye, K. - Part Two? There were a lot more great lines and highlights. So add them to this review and let me know your thoughts. If there is anything you want to see in these reviews, let me know! See you in two weeks!
